Which Wall Should You Wallpaper in a Bedroom? A Personal Guide to Choosing the Right Accent Wall
When I finally decided to wallpaper my bedroom, I thought the hard part was picking a print. I spent weeks scrolling through florals, geometrics, and subtle linens, convinced that once the pattern was chosen, everything else would fall into place. Then I stood in the middle of my empty room, roll of paper in hand, and realized I had no idea which wall should get the treatment. It turns out the pattern matters far less than where you put it. The right wall makes even a quiet paper feel intentional, while the wrong one can make a gorgeous design feel like an accident. In my experience, choosing a wallpaper wall comes down to three things: what you see when you walk in, what you see when you lie down, and how much visual weight you want the room to carry.
The Wall Behind Your Headboard: Your Bedroom's Natural Focal Point

The wall your bed rests against is the default answer for a reason, and it is usually the right one. When you walk into a bedroom, your eyes land on the bed first, and wallpaper directly behind the headboard frames it like a piece of art. It gives the bed a sense of grounding and turns the whole sleeping area into a defined zone, even in an open or awkwardly shaped room. In my own bedroom, I started with a soft brick-inspired paper on this wall, and it immediately gave the space warmth without feeling like a cave. A textured finish like brick works beautifully here because the bed already provides softness, so the contrast feels balanced rather than busy. One practical tip I learned the hard way: measure twice before you commit. The wall behind the bed is usually the largest uninterrupted surface in the room, which means it will show every seam and every misjudged cut. Go slow, use a laser level, and remember that this is the wall you will stare at every single night, so choose something that makes you exhale rather than second-guess.
Texture and Movement: When Fluted Panels Steal the Show

Once the headboard wall is handled, you might be tempted to stop, and that is honestly a very reasonable place to land. But if you have a second wall that keeps nagging at you, consider a paper with real texture and movement, like fluted panels. I resisted this trend for a long time because I assumed texture meant busy. What I discovered instead is that vertical fluting adds a quiet sense of height and rhythm, making a room feel taller and more polished with almost no effort on my part. A wall like this works especially well opposite the bed, where your eyes land when you first wake up, or on the wall beside a dresser where it can break up a long, flat stretch. The trick is restraint: pick one surface, let the texture do the talking, and keep the rest of the room plain so the wall feels like a deliberate designer choice rather than leftover wallpaper. If your bedroom is on the small side, choose a lighter fluted finish to keep the space airy, and always order a sample swatch to live with for a few days. What looks gorgeous in the store can feel completely different in your morning light, and that one extra step has saved me from more decorating regrets than anything else I do.
At the end of the day, there is no single correct wall. What matters is choosing the surface your eyes will thank you for, the one that anchors the bed, adds texture, or simply makes you happy every time you walk through the door. Start with the headboard wall, experiment with texture on a secondary surface, and let your own routine decide the rest. Your bedroom should feel like you, and the right wallpaper wall is the quickest way to get there.
